Self Tapes

This week I wanna talk about self tapes....who’s had to do them?! I’ve heard from some folks that they've had a lot of them. What about editing your own auditions...isn’t that FUN..? Ugh. I don’t know about you but trying to learn the software damn near ended me and my career.

One of the upsides of self taping is listening to yourself. Really listening. Why do I breathe there? Oh gawd - I sound lack-lustre, too slow! or just weird. Why hasn’t any engineer told me I do that?!? Mortifying.

Seriously, engineers must be some of the most patient people in the world having to fix all of our mouth clicks, burps, neck cracks, farts and odd breathing pattern weirdness - all the time.

Here’s the good part - we can be even stronger at auditioning now that we know what not to do anymore...! Right?!

Even if you’re not getting a lot of auditions right now - record yourself auditions anyway. It’s amazing practice.

Grab an ad, do your prep, decide on two solid choices and give’r.

Learn to give yourself direction and take it! Then - really listen.

Do you believe you? How’s your pacing? Are the two takes different enough from one another? Do you sound like you’re reading?! (Gawd forbid)

I think send-taping is here to stay - so we might as well get really good at it while learning about our own voice!
